The brief
What the job asked for
Moira’s Cafe sits in the busiest kind of hospital position — centrally located in Canberra Hospital, next to the lifts and a carpark entrance, where it runs flat out through its trading hours. The fit-out window was 48 hours, full stop.
A live hospital corridor doesn’t pause for a builder: the program had to land a finished cafe without interrupting the traffic flowing past it.
The build
From drawing to trading day
Off-site preparation made the window possible. Benches, panels and joinery arrived finished; the 48 hours on site were for landing, connecting and finishing, not fabricating.
Trades were synchronised and worked non-stop — water and electricity delivered to the space in the middle of carpenters, tilers and painters working their own sequences. Perini tiles, veneer timber and black Caesarstone under LED strips deliver a polished room on a sprint program.
On the record
As built, on the books
The cafe opened on time, finished, in the space of two days — in one of the most trafficked corners of a working hospital. With Centenary Cafe across the same campus, it anchors the ACT column of the record.
