The brief
What the job asked for
The Courtyard Cafe sits inside the Epworth Medical Centre in Camberwell, developed for the Zouki Group. The brief asked for a premium room — a cafe with an architect’s polish, bright enough to counter its clinical address.
The site helped: natural light enters from both sides, a rare gift in a medical building, and the design was drawn to keep every sightline luminous.
The build
From drawing to trading day
One stone decision organises the room: Alba stone runs the entire counter, bench and workspace, front and rear, then climbs the wall behind the counter from floor to ceiling — a single material gesture delivering an extremely high-quality finish.
Around it, the palette stays deliberately monotone. White plaster walls carry custom plaster lighting that appears to sink into the surface — an artwork feel above the long bench seat, its grey tone drawn from the stone. The timber-look floor is ceramic tile with a veneer-top finish, linked to the counter by cabinetry around the drinks fridge so the room reads as one flow.
On the record
As built, on the books
On the record: the most architecturally restrained room on the books — one stone, one tone, light from two sides. It is the reference this record offers when a client asks what premium means in a medical-centre setting.
