The brief
What the job asked for
The Green Shop Organic at the Royal Melbourne Hospital had to do two opposite things at once: read as a garden — raw, natural, alive — inside a windowless hospital tenancy, and meet the health department’s guidelines for a space preparing and serving food.
The brief called for instant organic appeal: a shopper passing in a hospital corridor should understand the store before reading a word of signage.
The build
From drawing to trading day
Natural-stained birch ply and pine lining boards set the palette, with matte white wall tiles and timber-look floor tiles keeping surfaces low-sheen and serviceable. A green wall softens the windowless volume, and overhead a central steel cage structure carries an artificial creeper through the space — the garden, suspended.
Behind the character, the delivery was process: food preparation and serving areas planned to the health department’s guidelines, with works coordinated closely with hospital building management and the council health department so every stage was approved before it happened.
On the record
As built, on the books
The store on record is a bright, fresh-feeling room with instant organic appeal — a garden grown inside a hospital corridor, delivered through exactly the kind of authority coordination healthcare-adjacent work demands.
