The brief
What the job asked for
In the heart of Casey Shopping Centre, Grindstone wanted a barber shop that would stop foot traffic — a compact tenancy with the presence of a room three times its size.
The brief asked for attitude with craft behind it: a space where the wait is part of the experience, and where every surface earns a second look.
The build
From drawing to trading day
Tiled walls and floors set the stage, giving the room a hard, graphic shell. Custom joinery shapes the reception and workstation areas — built to the barbers’ working reach, with a mini bar fridge set into the reception desk.
Floor-to-ceiling murals give the walls their voice, and black pendant lighting hangs the room in its own glow. A free-standing pinball machine and an old-school arcade console keep clients — kids and adults — amused while they wait.
On the record
As built, on the books
What stands is an absolute eye-turner: proof that a compact tenancy can own its corridor when joinery, art and lighting are treated as one composition. It remains one of the most photographed records on the books.
